Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paraeneticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin paraeneticus hortatory (early 16th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek παραινετικός < παραινέτης adviser, encourager ( < ancient Greek παραινεῖν to exhort, advise (see paraenesis n.) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French parénétique , adjective (1574 in Middle French). With use as noun perhaps compare classical Latin paraeneticē branch of philosophy concerned with the inculcation of moral principles. Compare earlier paraenetical adj.
