Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin par vagum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin par vagum, name of a pair of cranial nerves (1626 or earlier) < classical Latin pār a pair, use as noun of neuter singular of pār equal (see par n.1) + vagum , neuter singular of classical Latin vagus (see vagus n.). Compare pair n.1Par has also been used with other Latin adjectives or nouns to denote other pairs of (chiefly cranial) nerves, as1890 J. S. Billings National Med. Dict. II. 285/2 Par nervorum, a pair of nerves. Par nonum, hypoglossus.
