Etymology: < classical Latin proplasma clay mould for a sculpture (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek πρόπλασμα (only recorded in a classical Latin author, Cicero, denoting a rough draft) < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + πλάσμα plasma n., after Hellenistic Greek προπλάσσειν to mould or form before. Compare earlier proplastic adj., proplastic n.
Obsolete.
A mould; a matrix (literal and figurative).
