Etymology: < Malay pengguling roller < peng- , nominal prefix + guling to roll (in reference to its habit of rolling itself up), perhaps via French pangolin (1761 in Buffon; compare quot. 1771).The standard spelling with o as the middle vowel, adopted by Buffon, reflects an alternative transcription of the Malay etymon also found in W. Marsden Malayan Dict. (1812). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pæŋgō^u·lin) /pæŋˈɡəʊlɪn/.
