Etymology: < the name of Panurge, a character in Rabelais (1549 in Middle French as a common noun denoting a resourceful person; < ancient Greek πανοῦργος : see panurgic adj.2) + -ic suffix. Compare French panurgien (1844 in Baudelaire).
Obsolete. rare.
Resembling or characteristic of Panurge.Some later quots. at panurgic adj.2 (esp. quot. 1953) may be intended as allusions to Panurge.

Etymology: < ancient Greek πανοῦργος ready to do anything, knavish ( < παν- pan- comb. form + ἔργον work: see erg n.1) + -ic suffix, perhaps after Panurgic adj.1 Compare earlier panurgy n.
