Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παλινδρομικός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek παλινδρομικός recurring < παλίνδρομος recurring, running back again (see palindrome n. and adj.) + -ικός -ic suffix (see quot. 1941). Compare French palindromique (1956 or earlier in this sense), and also post-classical Latin palindromia , English palindromy , and French palindromie , all attested in the mid 18th cent. or earlier in sense ‘recurrent illness’. Compare also palindromic adj.1With the use of the Greek stem δρομ- in words relating to the course of a disease compare syndrome n.
Medicine.
Of rheumatism or arthritis: characterized by recurrent acute attacks of short duration. Also: designating or relating to this pattern of occurrence.
