单词 palestine
释义

Palestinen.

Brit. /ˈpalᵻstʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈpæləˌstaɪn/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Palestine.
Etymology: < Palestine (Classical Arabic Filasṭīn , Palestinian Arabic Falasṭīn , modern Hebrew Paleśĕtīnāh ), the name of a territory on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean. Compare earlier Palestinian adj. and see also Philistine n. and adj.The name Palestine is derived from ancient Greek Παλαιστίνη (used in Hellenistic Greek in early Christian writing), classical Latin Palaestīnē (the name of the Roman province; in post-classical Latin also Palaestina (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian), Palestina (late 4th cent. in Jerome)), perhaps via Aramaic pĕlištā'in (plural) Philistines < biblical Hebrew pĕlištīm (see Philistine n. and adj.); compare Pĕlešeṯ Philistia n. (in Assyrian sources in forms Palastu and Pilistu, 9th–8th cent. b.c.), ancient Egyptian plst, prst designating one of the ‘sea peoples’ of the eastern Mediterranean (c1200 b.c.), although not directly with reference to the area now called Palestine. It designates that territory on the eastern Mediterranean coast which in biblical times comprised the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. There have been many changes in the frontiers in the course of history. It was revived as an official political title for the land west of the Jordan mandated to Britain in 1920, but ceased to be recognized as a political entity when the state of Israel was established in 1948. The name however continued to be used to describe the area formerly covered by the mandate, particularly in the context of the struggle for territory and the political rights of displaced Palestinian Arabs. In 1993 an agreement was signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, returning some autonomy to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Palestine occurs as a place name in English contexts from late Middle English onwards; in earlier use (in Old English and Middle English) the Latinate form Palestina is found.
