Brit. /ˌvəːdʒᵻn ˈʌɪləndə/, U.S. /ˌvərdʒən ˈaɪləndər/, Caribbean English /ˌvɜː(r)dʒɪn ˈai(ˌ)landa/, /ˌvɜː(r)dʒɪn ˈai(ˌ)landʌ/, /ˌvɜː(r)dʒɪn ˈai(ˌ)landɜː(r)/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Virgin Islands , -er suffix1.
Etymology: < the singular of Virgin Islands, the name of a group of islands in the Lesser Antilles (Leeward Islands) + -er suffix1, after islander n.; the use of the singular for the base element is typical of derivatives formed on plural nouns. The islands were named in Spanish in honour of St Ursula and the eleven thousand Virgins (a1494, with one of the larger islands named St Ursula); subsequently the whole archipelago became known as Islas de las Vírgenes or las Vírgenes (first half of the 16th cent.; now Islas Vírgenes). In English use, the name of the archipelago is attested from at least the first half of the 17th cent. (both as Virgin Islands and as the Virgins).
A native or inhabitant of (any of) the Virgin Islands; a person of Virgin Island descent. The Virgin Islands are the westernmost islands of the Lesser Antilles, and are divided into three political groupings: the British Virgin Islands, a British Overseas Territory; the U.S. Virgin Islands, a U.S. unincorporated territory; and the Spanish Virgin Islands, part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
