paragramn.

Brit. /ˈparəɡram/, U.S. /ˈpɛrəˌɡræm/
Forms: 1600s paragramme, 1700s– paragram.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παράγραμμα.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek παράγραμμα play on words, pun (as a Greek word in Cicero ad Familiares 7. 32. 2), in ancient Greek (in Greek authors) in senses ‘substitute for a letter, in cipher’, ‘additional clause’ < παρα- para- prefix1 + γράμμα letter (see grammar n.); compare ancient Greek τὰ παρὰ γράμμα σκώμματα, literally ‘jokes by the letter’ (Aristotle Rhetoric 1412a28; compare quotations ?1637, 1711). Compare post-classical Latin paragramma copyist's error (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome), Middle French, French paragramme play on words (1586 or earlier).
A play on words in which a letter or group of letters in a word is altered so as to produce or suggest another word.By some writers restricted to the change of the initial letter or letters, as in Biberius Mero for Tiberius Nero, but Aristotle included examples such as κόλαξ for κόραξ.
