Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin paragoge; Greek παραγωγή.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin paragoge addition of a syllable to the end of a word (late 3rd cent.) and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek παραγωγή leading past, reduction of a dislocation, deploying from column into line, in Hellenistic Greek also addition of a syllable to the end of a word < παρα- para- prefix1 + ἀγωγή carrying, leading < ἄγειν to lead (see agon n.). Compare Middle French, French paragoge addition of a letter at the end of a word (c1370), manoeuvre in which the Greek militia formed a column (1842).For an attestation of the post-classical Latin term in a British source see:1555 R.
