Etymology: < the name of Henry Khunrath Pancoast (1875–1939), U.S. radiologist who described the conditions (see etymological notes below).
Medicine.
1. Pancoast's syndrome n. (also Pancoast syndrome) [described by Pancoast 1924, in Jrnl. Amer. Med. Assoc. 83 1407] a syndrome comprising pain, loss of sensation, and muscle weakness in the shoulder and arm, accompanied by Horner's syndrome, resulting from invasion of or impingement upon the brachial plexus and cervical sympathetic nerves by a tumour or other mass in the apex of the lung.

2. Pancoast's tumour n. (also Pancoast tumour) [described by Pancoast 1932, in Jrnl. Amer. Med. Assoc. 9 1391] a tumour, esp. a primary lung carcinoma, located in the apex of the lung.
