Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acardia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin acardia (1822 or earlier) < ancient Greek a- prefix6 + καρδία heart (see cardia n.). Compare French acardie (1822 or earlier). Compare Hellenistic Greek ἀκάρδιος (see acardiac adj.).
Medicine and Anatomy.
Congenital absence of the heart, usually accompanied by other malformations and typically occurring in one of a pair of monochorionic or conjoined twins. Also: a fetus affected by this (now rare).

1982 Jrnl. Ultrasound in Med. Jan. 13 Acardia must be distinguished from sacrococcygeal teratoma, omphalocele and macerated fetus.
2010 Jrnl. Perinatal Med. 38 247 Acardia was not associated with twin gestation until the reports of Mery in 1720 and Winslow in 1740.
