Etymology: < French palanque defensive stockade (1624 as pallanque , with reference to a stockade in the Levant) < Italian palanca (1601; 1411 in sense ‘large beam or pole’) < post-classical Latin palanca pole, stake (13th cent. in an Italian source), alteration of classical Latin palanga , phalanga trunk, log, pole < ancient Greek ϕάλαγγ- , ϕάλαγξ (see phalanx n.). Compare Romanian palancă palisade, stockade, Bulgarian palanka township, Serbian and Croatian palanka market town, Turkish palanca stockade, Hungarian palánk fence, palisade, stockade. Compare palenque n.The classical Latin pal- forms may be influenced by classical Latin pālus pale n.1
