Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Palamēdēus ; Greek Παλαμήδειος ; -an suffix.
Etymology: Partly < classical Latin Palamēdēus of or relating to Palamedes ( < Palamēdēs (ancient Greek Παλαμήδης), the name of a proverbially ingenious Greek hero at the siege of Troy, said to have invented some of the letters of the alphabet and the game of draughts + -ēus, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix, and partly < Byzantine Greek Παλαμήδειος ( < the name of Παλαμήδης + -ειος, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. Compare French palamédien (1868 in Littré, rare).
Of or relating to Palamedes.

Etymology: < scientific Latin †Palamedeae, use as order name (P. L. Sclater 1880, in Ibis 4 406) of the plural of Palamedea , genus name (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 12, 1766) I. 232; < classical Latin Palamēdēs : see Palamedean adj.1) + -an suffix.
Ornithology. rare.
Of or belonging to the group of birds comprising the former genus Palamedea (the screamers, now family Anhimidae).

1890 Cent. Dict. Palamedean, pertaining to the Palamedeidæ, and especially to the genus Palamedea, or having their characters.
2000 C. E. Landers tr. J. de Alencar Iracema xi. 123 Inhuma, nocturnal palamedean bird. The species spoken of here is Palamedea chavaria, which normally sings at midnight.
