Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish paladar.
Etymology: < Cuban Spanish paladar (although only attested from 1996 in this sense: see below), specific sense of Spanish paladar palate, taste < an unattested suffixed variant of classical Latin palātum palate n.The restaurants apparently take their name from the Brazilian soap opera Vale Tudo (1988–9), popular in Cuba, which featured a character who opens a chain of restaurants called Paladar (Portuguese paladar palate, taste (16th cent.)).
In Cuba: a small, independent, family-run restaurant, situated in a private home.The restaurants have operated legally in Cuba since 1995, when the Cuban government passed a law allowing the sale of ‘light foods’ from households.
