Etymology: < Hindi pakhāvaj (earlier as pakhāuj) < Prakrit pakkhāujja drum < Sanskrit pakṣātodya side drum < pakṣa side + ātodya percussion instrument.
A double-headed drum, used esp. in the northern part of India.
