Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish paisano.
Etymology: < Spanish paisano fellow-countryman (15th cent.), (now regional and American Spanish) peasant < French paysan (see peasant n.). In sense 2 after American Spanish paisano, probably alteration by folk etymology of faisán (see pheasant n.). Compare also paesano n. and paisan n. N.E.D. (1904) treats this as non-naturalized, and gives the pronunciation as (pāˌisā·no) /paiˈsano/.
1. In Spain and Spanish-speaking communities, esp. in Mexico and the south-western United States: a fellow-countryman; (also) a peasant.Sometimes used as a form of address.
