Originally Zoology.
The relationship formed during the courtship and mating of a pair of animals, esp. when this persists longer than the minimum period necessary for the mere act of reproduction, and involves care for the eggs or young, or mating during more than one breeding season. Hence also: a lasting emotional or sexual relationship between two people.
