单词 painter-stainer
释义

painter-stainern.

Brit. /ˌpeɪntəˈsteɪnə/, U.S. /ˈpeɪn(t)ərˈsteɪnər/
Inflections: Plural painter-stainers, painters-stainers.
Forms: see painter n.1 and stainer n. Also with capital initials.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: painter n.1, stainer n.
Etymology: < painter n.1 + stainer n.
1. A person whose business or employment is painting or staining; spec. (now usually in form Painter-Stainer) a member of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, a livery company of the City of London.Painters (those who applied paint to wood) and stainers (painters on cloth) originally belonged to separate fraternities, formed in the 13th cent.; the earliest reference to a painter applying to become also a stainer dates from 1433, but it was not until 1502 that the fraternities petitioned to join together formally. Members of the livery company include both artists and decorators. The restriction of meaning stated in quot. 1706, and repeated in some later dictionaries, is not supported by the quotations.
