Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French oxytocique, ocytocique.
Etymology: < French oxytocique, adjective ( A. Velpeau Traité élémentaire de l'art des accouchemens (1829) II. 577; also ocytocique (1859 or earlier)) < ancient Greek ὀξύς in sense ‘swift’ (see oxy- comb. form1) + τόκος childbirth (see toco- comb. form) + French -ique -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin oxytocium, noun (1585 or earlier), oxytoca, plural noun (1528 or earlier).In form ocytocic after ancient Greek ὠκυτόκος causing quick and easy birth; compare post-classical Latin ocytocion, noun (1551 or earlier), ocytocium, noun (1573 or earlier), both < ancient Greek ὠκυτόκιον, use as noun of neuter of ὠκυτόκιος promoting a quick birth. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (ǫksitǫ·sik) /ɒksɪˈtɒsɪk/.
