Etymology: < post-classical Latin oxyrodinum rose-oil mixed with vinegar (c400; also oxyrodinon ) < Hellenistic Greek ὀξυρρόδινον , use as noun (short for ὀξυρρόδινον ἔλαιον ) of neuter singular of ὀξυρρόδινος < ancient Greek ὀξυ- oxy- comb. form¹ + ῥόδον rose (see rhodo- comb. form) + -ινος -ine suffix².The β, γ, and δ forms represent a variety of apparently arbitrary shortenings and alterations. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (ǫksi·rodin) /ɒkˈsɪrəʊdɪn/.
