Etymology: < classical Latin palūdāmentum a military cloak fastened at one shoulder with a brooch or clasp, of uncertain origin, perhaps < Palūda , epithet of Minerva, goddess of wisdom and warfare + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare earlier paludament n.
Roman History.
A military cloak fastened at one shoulder with a brooch or clasp, worn by Roman generals and chief officers. Also: a royal cloak modelled on this.Cf. paludament n.
