单词 owl-faced
释义

owl-facedadj.

Brit. /ˈaʊlfeɪst/, U.S. /ˈaʊlˌfeɪst/
Forms: see owl n. and faced adj.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: owl n., faced adj.1
Etymology: < owl n. + faced adj.1With use in main sense designating vessels and vases from antiquity, compare ancient Greek γλαυκῶπις (Homer), an epithet of the goddess Athene, glossed by Liddell & Scott's Greek–Eng. Lexicon (ed. 9, 1940) as ‘probably, with gleaming eyes’, but by some scholars translated ‘owl-faced’ by association with γλαύξ the little owl (an emblem of Athene), both words being related to γλαυκός gleaming, flashing, (also) bluish-green or grey (see glaucous adj.; the sense relevant in this context is a subject of debate).
Having a face resembling that of an owl, with the eyes large and round, surrounded by circular markings, etc.; (of an object) bearing a representation or likeness of an owl's face. Also figurative.
