A wading shorebird of the genus Haematopus (family Haematopodidae), with black or black-and-white plumage, a strong orange-red bill, and bright red feet, feeding mainly on shellfish; esp. (in Britain and Europe) H. ostralegus, (in North America) H. palliatus.The name was first applied to the North American species, and later more generally (cf. quot. 1773); the earlier English names for the bird were sea-pie and olive.
