Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French papin.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French papin pap for children (13th cent. in Old French), starch-based glue (1468), probably < pape (see pap n.2) + -in -ine suffix4, although the suffix is uncertain.
Obsolete. rare.
A pudding made from milk, flour, egg yolks, and sugar.
