Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ovinus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ovinus of or relating to sheep (4th or 5th cent.; also in scientific Latin as a specific name, from 1767) < classical Latin ovis sheep (see ovi- comb. form2) + -īnus -ine suffix1. Compare French ovin (late 13th cent. in Old French in an isolated attestation in cartes ovines de parchemin documents written on sheepskin; subsequently from 1834), Italian ovino (14th cent.), Spanish ovino (1488 or earlier), Old Occitan ovin (in carn ovina mutton).
