gammyadj.n.2

Brit. /ˈɡami/, U.S. /ˈɡæmi/
Forms:

α. 1800s– gammy.

β. 1800s– gamey (rare).

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: gummy adj.1; game adj.2, -y suffix1.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) a variant of gummy adj.1 (compare gummy adj.1 4). Perhaps (ii) < game adj.2 (compare forms at that entry) + -y suffix1. It is possible that both gummy adj.1 and game adj.2 have shown some influence on the word.Alternatively, the word could perhaps show a borrowing < French †gambi bent (1611 in Cotgrave), French regional (especially central and eastern) gambi , cambi lame, bow-legged, (of legs) crooked, ultimately a derivative < Middle French gambe , jambe leg (see jamb n.); compare the family of words at gambrel n. However, the following apparent earlier instance of gamby meaning ‘crooked’ cannot be taken to support such an origin, as it appears to result simply from a misunderstanding by the translator (in the French original Gamby shows the name of a place in the Haute Loire):1656 tr. Marnettè Perfect Cook cvii. 223 The manner to make a Gamby bisket [Fr. Du biscuit de Gamby], that is to say, a crooked form of bisket, or kertled bisket. With the β. forms compare discussion of similar forms at game adj.2
