Etymology: < scientific Latin Ovibos (H. M. D. de Blainville 1816, in Bull. Sci. Soc. Philomatique Paris 76) < classical Latin ovis sheep (see ovi- comb. form²) + bōs ox (see bovine adj.), as the animal was considered to represent a type intermediate between the sheep and the ox. Compare French ovibos (1825).

A genus of mammals of the family Bovidae whose only living representative is the musk ox, Ovibos moschatus; (also ovibos) a mammal of this genus, a musk ox (rare).
