Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: out- prefix, swinger n.3
Etymology: < out- prefix + swinger n.3, after to swing out (see swing v.1). Compare inswinger n., and slightly later outswing n., outswinging adj.
1. Cricket. A ball which swings (swing v.1 11d) away from the batter towards the off side. Also occasionally: a bowler who makes the ball move in this way. Bowlers typically use outswingers to make the batter edge the ball and give a catch to the wicketkeeeper or slips.
