Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ouananiche.

Etymology: < Canadian French ouananiche (apparently 17th cent. in an isolated attestation: see note below; 1825 as annanish , 1876 as wananish , and subsequently from 1881 as ouananiche ) < Montagnais *wanāniš < wanān salmon + -iš , diminutive suffix. Compare winninish n. N.E.D. (1903) states that the word occurs in a book written by Father Masse, Jesuit missionary (1611–46), but this has not been traced.

A lake variety of the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, occurring in Labrador and Newfoundland.
