Etymology: < orient v. + -eer suffix2, after orienteering n. In quot. 1888 at sense 1 perhaps immediately after German orientieren to get one's bearings. Compare also Dutch oriënteren to get one's bearings, Swedish orientera to orientate (19th cent.), to practise orienteering (1931 or earlier).
