Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French organdi.
Etymology: < French organdi (1723 as organdy), of uncertain origin.Perhaps an alteration of Italian Organzi or < Persian Urġanjī of or from Urgench (see organzine n.).

A fine but stiff, translucent kind of muslin. Also as a count noun: (chiefly U.S.) a piece of this fabric; a dress made of organdy.
