Etymology: < orell- (in scientific Latin orellana, specific epithet of the plant ( Bixa orellana) from which anatto is obtained) + -in suffix¹.River of Orellana was a name given to the Amazon river in early books and maps, after the name of Francisco de Orellana (1511–46), Spanish explorer, who was the first to navigate and explore the river fully in the 1540s. Orellana was also occasionally used as the name of the colouring matter that could be obtained from anatto. Compare:1681 N. Grew Musæum Regalis Societatis ii. 218 For with the scarlet Grains abovesaid, they [sc. the Indians] paint and adorn themselves. The Tincture also which they extract from them, called Orellana, they sell to the Portuges.
