Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Othello.
Etymology: < Othello, the name of the ‘Moor of Venice’, the main character in a story published by G. Giraldi (Cinthio) in 1565 and later used by others, most notably Shakespeare.In sense 1 with allusion to part of the story being set in Cyprus. With sense 2 compare the following:1976 Time 22 Nov. 97 When Japanese salesman Goro Hasegawa..invented his simple board game in 1971, his father, a Shakespearean scholar, duly noted that the appeal of the game was based on a series of ‘dramatic reversals’. Perhaps, he suggested, it should be called Othello.
