Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: bum n.6, -ster suffix; bum v.6, -ster suffix.
Etymology: Either (i) < bum n.6 + -ster suffix, or (ii) < bum v.6 + -ster suffix Compare earlier beach bum n. at beach n. Compounds 2.
In The Gambia: a young man who spends time (usually on the beach) approaching and talking to foreign tourists in an attempt to obtain money or other gifts; spec. one who seeks romantic or sexual encounters with female tourists for this reason.
