Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: orchid n., -eous suffix.
Etymology: < orchid n. + -eous suffix, after scientific Latin Orchideae (Linnaeus Philos. Bot. (1751) ii. 27; < classical Latin orchis orchis n., the stem of which, orchi- , was erroneously taken by early botanists as orchid- ; compare post-classical Latin orchidis , orchides , in Bauhin Hist. Plant. (1651) II. xix. 772/2, and Hellenistic Greek ὀρχίδιον < ancient Greek ὄρχις + -ίδιον -idium comb. form) + -ous suffix.
Botany. Now rare.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of orchids, or of the family (formerly Orchideae, now Orchidaceae) comprising the orchids; orchidaceous.
