Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin orthopnoea; Greek ὀρθόπνοια.
Etymology: < classical Latin orthopnoea (Pliny) or its etymon ancient Greek ὀρθόπνοια < ὀρθόπνοος connected with orthopnoea ( < ὀρθο- ortho- comb. form + -πνοος , combining form < an ablaut variant of the base of πνέειν to breathe: see pneuma n.) + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare later orthopny n.
Medicine.
Dyspnoea that is most severe in recumbency and that is alleviated by assuming an upright position. In early use also: †an instance of this (obsolete).
