Etymology: < ounce n.1 + land n.1, after uris-land at ure n.4 1a. Compare markland n., pennyland n.Compare post-classical Latin unciata (in Scottish sources), Scottish Gaelic tìr-unga, lit. ‘land ounce’ (chiefly used in the Hebrides), both in the same sense.
Scottish History.
A measure of land in Orkney, Shetland, Caithness, and western Scotland, consisting of eighteen or twenty pennylands, on which a feu duty of one ounce of silver or one eighth of a mark was paid to the overlord; = uris-land at ure n.4 1a.Apparently originally corresponding to an earlier Celtic division of land: see quot. 1944.
