单词 orate
释义

oratev.

Brit. /ɔːˈreɪt/, /ɒˈreɪt/, /əˈreɪt/, U.S. /ɔˈreɪt/, /ˈɔrˌeɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ōrāt-, ōrāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōrāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of ōrāre to speak, plead, pray < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ἀρά prayer, curse, and perhaps Hittite ariya to consult an oracle. Compare earlier orator n.The word is only rarely attested before the second half of the 19th cent. when it was apparently re-formed after e.g. oration n., orator n. (perhaps first in the U.S.; compare e.g. quot. 1864 at sense 1b; recorded in Webster's Amer. Dict. Eng. Lang. Suppl. (1879)). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ōə·reit, orēi·t) /ˈɔəreɪt/ /ɒˈreɪt/.
