单词 oraon
释义

Oraonn.adj.

Brit. /əʊˈrɑːɒn/, U.S. /oʊˈrɑˌɑn/
Inflections: Plural Oraons, unchanged.
Forms: 1800s Oraou, 1800s Oraun, 1800s Uraun, 1800s– Oraon, 1800s– Uraon, 1900s– Aurang, 1900s– Orao, 1900s– Oraoan, 1900s– Urang, 1900s– Urao.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably a name given to the people by their Indic neighbours. Compare Hindi uṛāō spendthrift, and the following:1872 E. T. Dalton Descr. Ethnol. Bengal viii. i. 245 The Khurñkh or Orāons of Chútiá Nágpúr are the people best known in many parts of India as ‘Dhángars’... Oráon appears to have been assigned to them as a nickname, possibly with reference to their many migrations and proneness to roam.1906 S. Konow in G. A. Grierson Ling. Surv. India IV. ii. 406 The tribe call themselves Kuruḵẖ, and their language Kuruḵẖ Kathā... Another common name for the tribe is Orā, with many slightly varying forms such as Urā, Urang, Aurang, etc. Dr. Hahn explains this word as the totem of one of the septs into which the Kuruḵẖs are divided. According to him Orā is a name coined by the Hindūs, its base being Orgorã, hawk or cunny bird, used as the name of a totemistic sept. Compare, however, [Tamil] Kaikāḍī urāpāi, ‘man’; Burgaṇḍī ūrāpo, man, ūrāṅg, men.
