Etymology: Probably < orsellin- (in German Orsellinsäure orsellic acid; 1848 in the German translation of quot. 18481 for orsellic acid n. at orsellic adj.; perhaps < orchil n. (see variants at that entry) + German -in -ine suffix5) + -ic suffix. With the relationship between orsellic adj. and orsellinic adj. compare maleinic adj. beside maleic adj.
Chemistry.
1. orsellinic acid n. a crystalline phenolic acid found in some lichens and fungi, chiefly in the form of depsides such as lecanoric acid; 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, C8H8O4.
