Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French orphanité misery, neglect (c1330; c1185 in Old French as orphenité ; also in 13th cent. in Old French as orfenté ; French †orphanité state of being an orphan (1606)), Middle French orphenté fact of being an orphan (1389), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin orphanitas state of being an orphan (5th cent.), destitution (1136 in a British source) < orphanus orphan n. + -tas (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix).
Obsolete.
The condition of being an orphan; orphanhood.In quot. c1450: (probably) misery.
