Botany.
A genus of shrubs, subshrubs, and herbs of the family Asteraceae ( Compositae), mostly native to Africa but widely cultivated elsewhere for their brightly coloured flowers; (also osteospermum) a plant of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 923, after his use in Hortus Cliffortianus (1738) 424.
