Etymology: < fallen adj. + angel n., originally after post-classical Latin angelus lapsus (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine; < angelus angel n. + classical Latin lapsus , use as adjective of the past participle of lābī to glide, to slip, to fall (see labent adj. and compare lapse n.)); compare Revelation 12:9.
1. In Christian, Jewish, and Islamic theology: an angel who rebelled against God and was cast down from heaven. Cf. rebel angel n.
