Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Osteolepis , -iform comb. form.
Etymology: < Osteolep- (in scientific Latin Osteolepis, genus name (1835 or earlier; < osteo- osteo- comb. form + ancient Greek λεπίς scale: see lepido- comb. form) + -iform comb. form, after scientific Latin Osteolepiformes, order name (L. S. Berg 1940, in Travaux de l'Inst. Zool. de l'Academie des Sci. de l'URSS 5 388). Compare earlier Osteolepidae (Cope 1889).
Palaeontology.

Of, relating to, or designating fishes of the extinct, chiefly Devonian, sarcopterygian order Osteolepiformes, which is thought to have been the evolutionary precursor of the tetrapods and was characterized by the possession of thick scales, one of which (at the base of the fins) was conspicuously enlarged.
