单词 oroya fever
释义

Oroya fevern.

Brit. /ɒˌrɔɪə ˈfiːvə/, /əˌrɔɪə ˈfiːvə/, U.S. /ɔˌrɔɪə ˈfivər/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name LaOroya , fever n.1
Etymology: < the name of LaOroya, a town in central Peru (see quot. 1873) + fever n.1 Compare Spanish fiebre de Oroya (securely attested only from 1886).The first identified outbreak of this disease occurred among foreign workers constructing the Callao-Lima-Oroya railway in 1870–1 (compare quot. 1873), in which there was substantial American and British involvement. The English and Spanish names of the disease may thus have been contemporaneous.
Medicine.
A severe, febrile haemolytic anaemia caused by acute infection with Bartonella bacilliformis, a bacterium endemic to Peru and Ecuador which is transmitted by sandflies and also causes chronic warty skin lesions (verruga peruana). Also called Carrion's disease.
