Proverb. one born to be hanged will never be drowned and variants: used to justify indifference to danger, or explain a lucky escape, on the grounds that one will survive all misfortunes other than the one which has been preordained.Cf. sense 4a. Originally apparently expressing the logical proposition that if a person is so bad that he or she will inevitably die by hanging, he or she cannot suffer any other fate as a result of taking risks or behaving badly.
