Etymology: < scientific Latin Oötocoidea or Oöticoidea (neuter plural), former order name (J. D. Dana 1863, in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 35 70; both spellings are used by Dana) < ancient Greek ᾠοτόκος laying eggs, oviparous (see ootocous adj.) + scientific Latin -oidea (see -oid suffix). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (oˌǫ·tŏkoid) /əʊˈɒtəkɔɪd/.
