单词 on-even
释义

on-evenadv.

Forms: (Word division in Old English and Middle English examples frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts.)

α. Old English on æfene, Old English on æfenne, Old English on æfne (rare), Old English on æfyn, Old English on æfynne, Old English on efenne (Anglian), Old English–early Middle English on æfen, Old English (rare)–early Middle English on æuen, Old English (non-West Saxon)–early Middle English on efen, late Old English (Kentish)–early Middle English on efene, Middle English on euen, Middle English on euyn, Middle English on even.

β. early Middle English a æfen.

γ. Middle English a neuen, Middle English an euen, Middle English an ȝeuen, Middle English aneuen.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: on prep., even n.1
Etymology: < on prep. + even n.1, in β. and γ. forms with reduction of the first element (compare a prep.1, an- prefix1, a- prefix3). Compare a-morning adv., amorrow adv., and later on-eve adv.The frequent Old English on ǣfen (and similar forms without final -e ) reflects an original endingless locative (compare A. Campbell Old Eng. Gram. (1959) §572). Middle English a neuen at γ. forms appears to show metanalysis (see N n.).
Obsolete.
In the evening. Cf. on-eve adv.
