Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: optical adj., illusion n.
Etymology: < optical adj. + illusion n. Compare French illusion optique (1798; also illusion d'optique (1756), illusion de l'optique (1761)).
The experience of seeming to see something that is other than it appears, or (more widely) that does not exist (cf. illusion n. 4a); something having an appearance so resembling something else as to deceive the eye. Also: an illusory image or hallucination seen as a result of illness. Also figurative.
